Since 2018 gray whales have been showing unmistakable signs of stress, and in 2019 The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) declared a range-wide Unusual Mortality Event (UME) that lasted until 2023; which caused the population to plummet from 27,000 individuals in 2016 to 12,500 in 2025. 

Our research work started in the 1970s, and our program has been monitoring continuously since 2005 the whale's abundance, behavior, and reproduction in their winter aggregation areas and lagoons in Baja California Sur, Mexico, and sharing this information to various research teams along the gray whales' geographic range.

In this critical time for the gray whales we need your help. We are urgently asking for your financial support to sustain our research and advocacy at the necessary levels, in hopes we can eventually document the gray whale's recovery from this major population decline, nutritional stress, elevated mortality, and reproductive failure.
